Mount Laguna via Sunrise Highway: San Diego's High Country
Climb Sunrise Highway from Pine Valley to Mount Laguna: about 8.7 miles and 2,112 ft at 4.5%. Route, stops, season and safety.
Overview
Sunrise Highway climbs from the Pine Valley area into the Laguna Mountains, San Diego County's high country. At the top, Mount Laguna sits among pine forest at around 6,000 ft, with overlooks above the Anza-Borrego Desert. It is a different San Diego: cool air, pine trees and, in winter, sometimes snow. PJAMM ranks Sunrise Highway as San Diego County's seventh-ranked bike climb and notes that the nearby Pine Creek Road and Kitchen Creek Road climbs are quieter alternatives worth exploring.
The climb is moderate and steady rather than steep, which makes it a good introduction to high-elevation riding in San Diego County. Riders who want more can explore PJAMM's recommended nearby climbs, Pine Creek Road and Kitchen Creek Road.
The route in plain words
Riders usually park in Pine Valley and ride a mile to the start of the climb at Sunrise Highway (County Road S1). The road climbs north steadily through the Cleveland National Forest toward Mount Laguna. PJAMM notes the Laguna Mountain store is a couple of miles past the climb finish. Return the same way, or continue on Sunrise Highway along the desert edge for a longer ride. AdventureCORPS has used the area for its Mount Laguna Bicycle Classic route.
Distance and elevation
PJAMM measures the climb at 8.7 miles with 2,112 ft at 4.5%, with a steepest quarter mile of 7.4% and a steepest mile of 6.1%. Mycols lists a similar 13 km at 4.2% with 583 m. The round trip from Pine Valley is roughly 20 miles.
Because 61% of the climb is at 0 to 5% grade and 37% at 5 to 10% per PJAMM, it rewards steady pacing. Most of the effort comes in the middle part of the climb.
Best time to ride
Spring through fall. Summer is pleasant at altitude compared with the coast or desert. Winter can bring snow and ice, along with snow-play traffic on weekends. One PJAMM reviewer noted riding it comfortably in January in mild weather, but conditions vary widely.
Water and coffee stops
PJAMM recommends Major's Diner in Pine Valley and notes the Laguna Mountain store north of the climb finish. There are no provisions on the climb itself.
Bring enough water for the full climb and return, especially in summer: there are no fountains along the route.
Safety notes
PJAMM describes the roadway as fair to good with minimal shoulder and mild to moderate traffic. Blind turns without shoulder can feel nervy, and a reviewer warns that tree shadows can hide potholes on the descent. Use lights, ride single file, and bring layers for the descent.
Cell coverage in the Laguna Mountains can be limited. Carry a spare tube, a pump or CO2, and enough water, and let someone know your plan. Watch for wildlife crossing the road, especially early in the morning.
Which bike and setup
A road bike with compact gearing is plenty for the steady grade. Bring arm warmers and a vest even in summer; temperatures at the top can be much cooler than in Pine Valley.
