Aliso Creek Bikeway: A Car-Free Spine Through South Orange County

The Aliso Creek Bikeway: about 18.5 miles of mostly car-free trail through South Orange County. Access points, stops, safety and bike tips.

Overview

The Aliso Creek Bikeway follows Aliso Creek through Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel. It is the easiest way to ride across South Orange County without traffic lights, and it ties into longer loops including Santiago Canyon Road. It is a pleasant creekside ride with trees, parks and a gentle grade that makes it a good choice for newer riders and for recovery days.

It also works as a connector: riders from Lake Forest, Mission Viejo and Laguna Hills use it to reach longer rides without riding busy arterial roads.

The route in plain words

Starting at the upper end near Rancho Santa Margarita, the trail follows Aliso Creek downstream through parks and neighborhoods, crossing under or alongside the main roads. It continues through Mission Viejo and Lake Forest into Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel toward Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. Riders often combine it with El Toro Road, Santiago Canyon and Cook's Corner for a big loop; Komoot's Santiago Canyon Road and Aliso Creek Bikeway loop from Irvine is a well-known example.

Because the trail passes so many neighborhoods, there are many access points. Pick one near you, ride out for half your planned time, and turn around. The gentle grade means you will usually work a little harder heading upstream toward Rancho Santa Margarita.

Distance and elevation

The City of Mission Viejo describes the Aliso Creek corridor as an 18.5-mile trail; OC Parks describes the Aliso Creek Regional Trail as about 15 miles. Exact distance depends on which end you start from. The grade is gentle downhill toward the coast, so going upstream is gradually uphill.

Best time to ride

Year-round. Mornings are quietest. After heavy rain some low crossings can flood or collect mud, so check conditions. Summer afternoons inland are hot.

On warm days, the trees along the creek give some shade, making it more pleasant than open roads in the afternoon.

Water and coffee stops

Parks along the creek have restrooms and water at various points; the Aliso Creek Trailhead in Mission Viejo is a good meeting point. Shopping centers near the trail in Mission Viejo, Lake Forest and Laguna Hills have coffee and food.

Safety notes

The trail is shared with walkers, runners, dogs and kids. Ride at a sensible pace, announce passes and slow near underpasses and blind curves. Watch for road crossings where the trail meets streets. Use lights in underpasses.

Some underpasses and creek crossings can flood after storms; turn around rather than ride through standing water.

Which bike and setup

Any bike works. Road riders should run 28 to 32 mm tires. Gravel bikes can explore the unpaved sections and connect to nearby dirt trails. Hybrid and e-bike riders will love the gentle grade.
