Dana Point to San Clemente: Flat Coastal Miles at the South End of OC
Ride the coast from San Clemente to Dana Point Harbor via Doheny State Beach: up to about 10.6 miles round trip on flat, separated paths.
Overview
South Orange County's coast is ideal for easy, flat miles. The ride from San Clemente North Beach to Dana Point Harbor uses a separated bike path along PCH and through Doheny State Beach, and it is one of the few coastal routes in the region that is both car-free for much of its length and easy to reach by train. It is a great recovery ride, a family outing, or the beginning of a longer day toward San Juan Capistrano.
The route in plain words
OCTA's San Clemente bike cruise guide lays it out: from San Clemente North Beach Station, head north along PCH in a separate dedicated bike lane. The path cuts through Doheny State Beach before arriving in Dana Point Harbor. For a short ride, the San Clemente Beach Trail starts at the south end of the North Beach station and parallels the beach. For a longer option, at Doheny turn inland onto the San Juan Creek Trail into San Juan Capistrano. Strong riders can continue south to Oceanside via Camp Pendleton, but only if they understand the base access rules.
Riders combining the train and the bike should confirm Metrolink service first: OCTA posts notices about service interruptions between Laguna Niguel and Oceanside, including tide-related closures.
Distance and elevation
OCTA lists the Dana Point option as up to 10.6 miles round trip on a super flat path, the San Clemente Beach Trail as up to 5 miles round trip, and the San Juan Capistrano option as up to 14 miles round trip. Oceanside is about 26 miles one way, through Camp Pendleton.
Best time to ride
Any time of year. Summer weekends are crowded on the beach paths; early mornings are best. Winter high tides and storms occasionally affect coastal access and rail service; OCTA posts notices about rail closures between Laguna Niguel and Oceanside.
Water and coffee stops
OCTA recommends Coffee Importers in Dana Point Harbor. Doheny State Beach has restrooms. Downtown San Clemente near the pier has food and coffee.
Safety notes
The beach trail is shared with walkers, runners, strollers and dogs. Slow down, use a bell, and be extra careful at crossings near the harbor and the state beach entrance. Watch for sand on the path. The PCH section near Dana Point has traffic and turning cars.
Which bike and setup
Any bike works. A gravel bike or a road bike with 30 mm or wider tires is ideal because of sand and patched surfaces. Metrolink allows bikes on board and has designated bike cars.
For a family ride, a cruiser or hybrid works fine on the beach path; Bicycles San Clemente near the North Beach station rents bikes, according to OCTA.
