Ask Veloaded: custom bike builds

What is a custom bike build?
A custom build means starting from a frameset and choosing each part, rather than buying a complete bike as specced by the factory. You pick the groupset, wheels, cockpit, saddle and finishing details to suit your riding, fit and taste.
At Veloaded Cyclery, custom builds are done by Edgar Rodriguez, our Founder & Master Builder. We help you choose parts, check compatibility before anything is ordered, and build the bike with careful cable routing and correct torque. Frames can come from brands we're authorized for, such as Pinarello, Colnago, Cervélo, Look and Scott, and wheels from ENVE, Princeton or Scope. You can also bring or ship your own frame. Call (714) 760-4908 to start planning. See custom bike builds.
How much does a custom bike build cost?
It depends entirely on the frame, parts and labor involved, so we won't quote a number here. A build with a top-tier frame, electronic groupset and carbon wheels is a very different project from a frame swap using parts you already own.
The best way to get an honest number is to call Veloaded Cyclery at (714) 760-4908 or request a quote. Tell us the frame you're considering, the groupset and wheels you have in mind, and anything you're supplying. We'll put together a quote and tell you where spending more makes a real difference and where it doesn't.
Which groupset should I choose for a custom build: Shimano, SRAM or Campagnolo?
All three make excellent groupsets, and the honest answer depends on you. Things to weigh:
- Ergonomics: lever shape and shift logic feel very different. Try them if you can.
- Gearing: the chainring and cassette range that suits your terrain.
- Compatibility: with your frame's bottom bracket, routing and your wheels' freehub.
- Electronic or mechanical: and wired or wireless.
- Look: some riders want Campagnolo on an Italian frame, for example.
At Veloaded Cyclery we do Di2 / AXS / Campy setup and we're a Shimano dealer. We'll talk through the options with you and check compatibility before parts are ordered. Call (714) 760-4908.
Can I bring my own parts for a custom build?
Usually, yes. Many riders move a groupset or wheels from an old bike to a new frame, or have parts they've collected. At Veloaded Cyclery we'll build with parts you supply, as long as they're compatible and in safe condition.
Send us the full parts list before the build so we can check compatibility: bottom bracket and crank, brake and axle standards, freehub, seatpost and cable routing. If a part is worn or won't work with the frame, we'll tell you honestly before we start. You can drop parts off or ship them with the frame by arrangement.
