How often should I service my road bike?

There isn't one honest number for everyone. It depends on how much you ride, the conditions and how you look after the bike between services. A rider doing long weekly miles needs service far more often than someone riding a few times a month, and rain, dust or sweat on an indoor trainer all speed up wear.

Practical signs it's time: shifting that's noisy or hesitant, a chain that looks grimy no matter what, brakes that feel different, new creaks, or tires and brake pads looking worn. Many riders also book a full service before a big event or season. Our Veloaded Essential Service covers drivetrain deep cleaning, derailleur hanger alignment, component reinstallation and adjustment, inspection of chain, tires, brake pads and tubeless sealant, and a final safety check. Call (714) 760-4908 to book or ask for a quote.

What does the Veloaded Essential Service include?

The Veloaded Essential Service is our core service package. It includes:

  • Drivetrain deep cleaning of chain, cassette, chainrings and derailleur pulleys
  • Derailleur hanger alignment with a dedicated alignment tool
  • Component reinstallation and adjustment, so shifting and braking work precisely
  • Component inspection of chain wear, tires, brake pads and tubeless sealant
  • A final safety check before the bike goes back to you

If we find something that needs replacing, we tell you and ask before doing any extra work. If something is still fine, we say so. For pricing, call the shop at (714) 760-4908 for a quote, or book online. More on our road bike tune-up page.

When should I replace my bike chain?

Chains wear and "stretch" as their pins and rollers wear, and a worn chain then wears your cassette and chainrings faster. Replacing a chain on time is usually much cheaper than replacing a whole drivetrain later.

The reliable way to know is to measure it with a chain checker rather than going by mileage, because wear depends heavily on conditions, cleaning and lubrication. Symptoms like skipping under load, noisy shifting or a chain that won't stay quiet after cleaning can also point to wear. Chain wear inspection is part of our Veloaded Essential Service, and we'll tell you honestly whether yours needs replacing now or still has life left. Call (714) 760-4908 to book.

What is derailleur hanger alignment and why does it matter?

The derailleur hanger is the small, replaceable metal piece that attaches the rear derailleur to the frame. It's designed to bend in a crash so the frame doesn't, which means it bends easily: a tip-over, a bike rack, or a bump in a travel case can be enough.

Even a slight bend throws off shifting, especially on 11- and 12-speed drivetrains, mechanical or electronic, and in bad cases can put the derailleur closer to the spokes. Aligning the hanger with a proper tool is often the fix for shifting that won't index no matter how you adjust it. Derailleur hanger alignment is included in every Veloaded Essential Service. Call (714) 760-4908 if your shifting has gone off after a knock.

Why does my bike creak when I pedal hard?

A creak under load is one of the hardest noises to track down, because sound travels through a frame. The bottom bracket is a common culprit, but so are pedals and cleats, chainring bolts, the seatpost and saddle rails, the stem and handlebar, thru-axles and even quick-release skewers.

At Veloaded Cyclery we work through the likely sources before replacing parts. If it is the bottom bracket or bearings, we remove, clean, grease and reinstall them, or replace them if they're worn, including CeramicSpeed bearing options if you want an upgrade. We'll explain what caused the noise before recommending anything. Call (714) 760-4908 to book, and for pricing, call for a quote.
