Coast Highway 101 runs through Solana Beach and Del Mar, and it's one of the most popular road-riding corridors in North County. Add the climb toward Torrey Pines just south of Del Mar, and you get fast group rides, coastal miles and a short, steady hill, often all on one ride.

Coast riding, and what it does to a bike
Highway 101 is busy with riders, cars and beachgoers, especially on weekends, so lights and predictable riding matter. The marine layer and salt air are constant.

From Jimmy Durante Blvd, get on the I-5 north and stay on it up the coast. Choose the SR-73 toll road or the toll-free I-405 near Irvine, and leave at Fairview Rd. Weekend beach traffic around Del Mar can slow the first few miles.
